Life can throw curveballs at us, and one of the most challenging to handle is a health crisis. Imagine waking up one day and finding out you have serious pain and illness. It’s a scenario none of us want to encounter, but it’s a reality many face.

Part One: The Western Approach to Health Crisis

Understanding the Western Way

In Western societies, facing a health crisis often involves a series of steps:

  • Keep a positive attitude
  • Stay informed about the condition
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle
  • Seek help from support networks
  • Practice acceptance
  • Employ mindfulness and stress management techniques
  • Foster hope for the future

These steps might be encapsulated in the English phrase: “Stay positive, stay informed, and take care of yourself.”

Part Two: The Eastern Wisdom in Navigating a Health Crisis

Embracing the Eastern Wisdom

In Chinese culture, the phrase “朔本求元,返璞归真,浩气长存” offers a profound perspective on handling adversity:

  • “朔本求元 (Trace back to the origin)”: Understand the root cause and seek appropriate treatment
  • “返璞归真 (Return to simplicity and truth)”: Focus on the basics of good health and minimise stress
  • “浩气长存 (The noble spirit lives forever)”: Maintain resilience and a positive spirit

Translated concisely, this phrase means: “Seek the root to understand the whole, embrace simplicity to return to our true selves, and preserve the enduring spirit that aligns with the cosmos.”

Part Three: Connecting Western and Eastern Approaches

Building Bridges between Cultures

While seemingly different, the Western and Eastern approaches share many similarities. They both advocate for:

  • Understanding the situation (seeking the root cause or staying informed)
  • Adopting a positive mindset (maintaining a noble spirit or keeping a positive attitude)
  • Focusing on basic health practices (returning to simplicity or maintaining a healthy lifestyle)

Whether we use a Western or Eastern lens, the key lies in understanding the situation, adopting a positive and proactive approach, and focusing on the basics of good health. In the face of a health crisis, these strategies can guide us to navigate the journey with resilience, wisdom, and hope.

Part Four: The Unity of Body and Cosmos in Acupuncture

Healing with Acupuncture

Acupuncture, a cornerstone of traditional Chinese medicine, is an elegant embodiment of the concepts in the phrase “朔本求元,返璞归真,浩气长存”. It embodies a holistic view of health, linking our physical, mental, and spiritual selves in harmony with the cosmos.

While not necessarily the primary solution to a health crisis, acupuncture holds a significant position in managing pain and stress. It aims to unblock the stagnation of Qi (life force or energy), blood, and body fluids, restoring the flow and function of our body and mind. This harmonisation is particularly valuable during a health crisis, where the body needs all its systems functioning optimally to heal.

A Case Example

Consider the example of a patient who came to me with a back sprain. The individual had previously seen a physiotherapist and undergone two sessions of dry needling for psoas muscle pain. This muscle, located deep in the body, is typically challenging to reach with a needle without ultrasound guidance. Having previously received successful acupuncture treatment for another injury, the patient reached out to me for help.

In our clinic, we adopt a unique approach that doesn’t necessitate direct needling into the problematic psoas muscle in the early stage of the injury. During the initial treatment, I implemented a protocol called “Bring Qi Home”, which involved the insertion of four needles in the abdomen. To further invigorate the channels and collaterals, three additional needles were placed in points along the Gallbladder, Stomach, and Spleen channels located at the side of the body.

After a 30-minute needle retention period, the patient was astounded by the result. Upon rising from the treatment table, they experienced complete relief from their pain. The successful outcome was not only a testament to the effectiveness of the treatment but also underscored the principles of Chinese philosophy in practical application, emphasising the need to understand the root cause, embrace simplicity, and maintain a resilient spirit.
