Cough & Respiratory Symptoms

Lung is a ‘delicate’ zang organ in TCM, and can be easily affected by environmental factors such as wind, cold, heat, dust or pollen. Pathogenic factors related exterior invasions (virus, pathogens) to the lungs typically start from the upper respiratory tract (nose and mouth), or through the skin pores (in TCM skin is associated with Lung), which can be linked to low immunity or weakness in the defensive Qi.

When there is a pathologic condition, western medical therapy may be the first consideration and the necessary choice, and Kampo therapy may be helpful, with concurrent use of Western medical therapy.

difference between two different systems:

Western medicine

Kampo medicine

Early stage

Drugs such as anti-influenza take longer time to be effective, normally 2 or more days after the onset of the early symptoms.

Immediate result, within 30 minutes, the early stage formulas take effect.

Aiming at speeding up this stage and preventing the next sub acute stage.

Prevent the worsening of symptoms.

Constitutional weakness

Weak GI function limited some people with strong side effects, such as NSAIDs.

Elderly, women in pregnancy or breastfeeding, children with weak strength, and patients with chronic conditions: are very sensitive to drugs.

Have different formulas tailored for different constitutional states, GI weakness, and special types of patients such as elderly, people with frailty, women and children.

Formulas are designed to assist the body’s functions and strengthen.

Formulas are designed to have no bad effects on people with chronic conditions.

Mechanism

Drugs are designed to kill pathogens or suppress symptoms such as high temperature, aches, pains and headaches.

There’s no cough medicine.

Phlegm is a waste product.

Both cough and phlegm are cleared by waiting for the body’s immune system to do the job at its own time and pace.

Many of the drugs are over the counter.

Relieve the exterior either promoting perspiration or reserved body fluids, at the same time, causing the body’s temperature to rise temporarily, which is the natural process that the body follows to push out and eliminate the virus.

Relieving symptoms naturally, such as cough, phlegm.

Boosting immunity in natural herbal formulas has been practised for 2000 years.

In Japan, western physicians has integrated the use of Kampo with drugs

Resting and diet

Resting is not advised unless he/she is very ill.

Diet is not considered: daries such as milk can still be taken, even if there’s mucus accumulation.

Foods are categorised by nutrients not natural properties.

Resting is recommended because keeping the body’s temperature is the most important.

Electrolytes based diets such as simple congee are recommended.

Damp types of food are avoided for people with phlegm or fluid accumulations. Foods are categorised by natural elements of hot, cold, damp, yin and yang.

Side effects

Drugs also suppress body functions.

The use of multiple western drugs for various symptoms need to be careful with unexpected results.

No side effects.

May be bad effects only if the prescription has failed to consider a patient’s constitution, GI function, and Vital substances.

Recovering stages

Only two stages:

  1. Self recovering stage
  2. Hospitalisation stage

4 stages: 3 yang stage and one yin stage.

  1. acute (taiyang), sub-acute (shaoyang), persistent stage (yang ming), with different strategies in the herbal formulations for helping patients’ recovery. Preventing the worsening of symptoms.
  2. Yin stage, may need hospitalisation, may still have formulas to assist the recovery.

Costs

Very low in the 1st stage;

Very expensive in the hospitalisation stage.

Generally very low.

Cough can be categorised as 3 types:

A

1) Acute cough - within three weeks

A

2) Persistent cough - three to eight weeks

A

3) Chronic cough - after eight weeks

Kampo medicine has formulations for relieving cough and tailored for different individuals’ constitution and GI functions and vital substances imbalances.

From our owner:

I can’t say enough about what we can do for helping people’s cold/flu symptoms at all stages, for all ages. For the 1st stage (day 1 – 3) typically itchy throat, sneezing, body aches; and stage 2 (4 – 7 or 10), chesty, cough, phlegm, nauseous, vomiting; stage 3: post virus recovery; I would like to specify what we are doing is not to kill or suppress any virus, but helping the body to recovery and prevent worsening of symptoms. We may help people to recover in one week, instead of going down the track of struggling by your self in weeks or months.

Before you have any symptom, please come and get two formulas for the stage 1 and 2; for stage 3, we are waiting people to come in for appointments because the symptoms are various and constitutionally related.

Well very pleased we have finished our Iso – 3 out of 4 of us got Omicron – we chose not to self isolate between our own family.  As we could not imagine being without our kids close by..  Been a few days now, that we could leave home, but it still feels weird to be back out and about..  Our symptoms were high temps, head cold, dry cough, and exhaustion.   BEST advise… is rest rest rest…  Other than two panadol x 2 –  I relied on Chinese herbs from Kapiti Acupuncture.  Cannot rave highly enough.. boosted my immune and reversed the onslaught, when it started to go down to my chest.  Other friends not so lucky – terrible aches and pain.. so dont think – I wanna just get it over with and get O  – there is some very very sick people that I know – take care peeps, remember rest rest rest.  Lie down and watch tv, netflix, read, everytime I tried to work or do something my temp rocketed….
